FUE Europe (FUEE) and the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgery (IAHRS) announce a collaborative hands-on workshop this November 23 – 24, 2018 at both the Hairline Clinic and the Department of Anatomy at the University of Ankara. Participants will have a hands-on opportunity to train in FUE hair transplant, first with cadavers at the University of Ankara and then with patients at the Hairline Clinic’s state of the art office.

This hands-on live FUE training is a valuable chance for surgeons looking to learn about hair transplantation or to improve their skill at it. Participants will train with some of the leading experts in FUE, have the opportunity to network and enjoy beautiful Ankara.

Why Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is the latest hair transplant method currently available. The concept is to extract either individual follicular grafts or small clusters of such, and then transplant them into the recipient area. This is quite different than previous transplant methods, namely Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and other strip methods, that involve extracting a large swath of skin from the scalp and then cutting it into follicular grafts.

FUE vs. Strip Techniques: A Quick Comparison

Along with often leading to less convincing results, strip transplant methods always leave a noticeable scar. No transplant surgeon can predict the size of the said scar; sometimes it is quite narrow and sometimes quite large. Even narrow FUT scars are noticeable with short hair, however, as well warp the hair growth angle. Another prime complaint against FUT is its longevity; hair that continues to thin or bald can make a FUT transplant seem all the more obvious due to a “plug like” appearance of the transplants. Many FUT patients eventually arrange for a FUE transplant to repair or otherwise mask the earlier transplant.

FUE, meanwhile, offers more consistent results if by a proficient surgeon. The technique itself has a reputation for greater accuracy than FUT, enabling the specialist to create hairlines that truly appear convincing and discrete. Depending on the technique, FUE can leave scars with a “moth hole” appearance and many FUT surgeons are quick to highlight this fact. FUE scars, however, are much easier to correct and rarer thanks to advancements in the technique.

Patients who select FUT typically do so for three reasons; price, the speed of the hair transplant procedure and the ability to not shave their hair. For years, FUE required patients to shave their heads, and, due to the nature of the procedure, it also took longer to conduct than FUT. Advancements in FUE, however, now enable proficient surgeons to conduct FUE hair transplant in a shorter amount of time and, depending on their skill level, to do so without shaving patients’ heads. FUE generally still costs more per graft but greater availability of the technique and competitiveness between clinics is driving down the cost and therefore increasing the procedure’s availability for patients.

FUE Recovery is Also Easier on the Patient

Along with better results and scarring, FUE is also easier on the patient. FUT patients contend with a large wound on the back of their head that requires several months of healing and care. FUE patients, meanwhile, can be far more active after the procedure; they still must be careful to follow all post-op instructions, though.

Train in the Best Current FUE Techniques!

FUE offers better results and greater patient satisfaction…if the surgeon is properly trained and adequate at the procedure. Cosmetic surgeons often consider FUE hair transplantation a periphery discipline but nothing could be further from the truth. Hair transplant specialists must dedicate a major amount of time and care into training, particularly those that focus on FUE. As important, surgeons must consider who they train with and the techniques they wish to learn.

Learn Both Mechanical and Manual FUE in Ankara

Available for over a decade, many surgeons have researched different ways to conduct FUE hair restoraton. A number of techniques and options have established themselves and have their advocates. These techniques vary either by their surgical instruments or another manner. All of them are better for patients than FUT, that much is certain, but FUE techniques still vary by effectiveness.

An advocate for surgeons and patients alike, FUEE only teaches FUE techniques proven to offer the best results possible. Many options exist and have potential, but clinical research indicates that manual and mechanical FUE are currently the most effective.

  1. Manual FUE involves relatively basic instruments; the surgeon and his use small punches to extract and transplant grafts. Though a relatively slow option, many FUE experts swear by it because they prefer the control and simplicity.
  2. Mechanical FUE, meanwhile, is a more advanced form of FUE that involves the use of a mechanical punch. Quicker and often as accurate as manual FUE, mechanical FUE also requires specific training to operate the punch.

Our upcoming meeting in Ankara will feature mechanical and manual techniques in-depth. Participants will be able to learn about and try both, offering an idea of which they prefer based off each’s strengths and handling. As important, surgeons who excel at either or both techniques will be available to offer instruction and assistance.

Automatic and Robotic FUE are Still Developing

Surgeons who wish to offer FUE typically assume that techniques involving advanced instruments are more efficient and require less training. Neither of these beliefs is true. Relatively labor intensive, many surgeons looking to improve FUE both consider ways to speed up the procedure and lessen its burden. Robotic and automatic FUE are two such results of this research.

However, much faster these techniques are, though, both automatic and robotic FUE is clinically proven to bring worse results. Robotic techniques such as ARTAS have a higher graft transection rate, when follicles are irreparably damaged, and is only applicable to certain types of patients. Automatic techniques like Neograft, meanwhile, also have higher graft transection rates, are more likely to leave scars and are notorious for using brand representatives rather than surgeons for the procedure. FUEE supports all advancements in FUE but, for the Ankara meeting, will not focus on automatic or robotic FUE due to the results, cost and limited applicability.

Hair Restoration Training Quality Matters!

Whatever variant of FUE a surgeon practices, one thing is certain: proper training is essential. FUE is gaining prominence as more surgeons express interest in it and there is greater availability for training. However, the pool of specialists with the experience to offer proper training in FUE remains comparatively slim. Complicating access further, there are currently few opportunities for FUE surgeons and surgeons interested in the method to convene.

This gap between the demand and availability of FUE training has led to a number of hair restoration surgeons opting for subpar lessons that do not properly prep them for successful hair transplantation. FUEE seeks both advocates for the overall adoption of FUE and works to increase the availability to train and network. Already experienced at leading workshops, the instructors at Ankara will be among the most qualified FUE surgeons in the world.

Gain Hair Transplant Experience Through Hands-on Training!

Hands-on training is essential for both conceptualizing a technique and building skill in it. The upcoming training program in Ankara will Allot significant time for participants to train in numerous techniques. At the University of Ankara, on the first day, participants will familiarize themselves with techniques on cadavers while on the second day, at the Hairline Clinic, they can demonstrate their skill on patients. All participants will receive direct, personal feedback from instructors throughout all training to accommodate their strengths and shortcomings.

The Hairline Clinic: A Top Destination to Correct Baldness

A leading hair transplant clinic led by Dr. Özgür Öztan, the Hairline Clinic features state-of-art equipment in a gorgeous space. Participants will train with highly experienced surgical teams who truly excel at FUE procedures. This is both essential for participants to learn about the method and to observe how assistants should contribute to the procedure.

FUE Europe: The Leading Organization on FUE

A leading organization for FUE surgeons, FUE Europe (FUEE) has a growing membership that includes some of the method’s top figures. FUEE, currently, is the only organization worldwide that completely focuses on FUE. This dedication is because the technique is indisputably better for near all patients, as well because most hair transplant organizations pay little attention to FUE at their meetings and training programs. FUEE collaborates with hair transplant surgeons worldwide and welcomes any relevant articles for FUE Magazine, the organization’s flagship publication.
